Niek Klazinga, MD, PhD

Niek Klazinga has been a professor of Social Medicine at the University Medical Center/University of Amsterdam since 1999 and became an active emeritus in 2024. From 2006 to 2022, he served as the strategic lead of the Health Care Quality and Outcomes program at the OECD in Paris, where he continues to provide advisory support. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Klazinga has participated in numerous health services research projects and policy discussions focused on quality of care and health system performance, publishing extensively on the subject. His research group in Amsterdam is a WHO collaborating center for quality and equity in primary health care.

Previously, he held positions as the medical director of the Municipal Public Health Office of Amsterdam and as a member of the board of trustees for Isala Clinics, a teaching hospital, as well as Arkin, a mental health care institute. His current commitments include advisory roles for WHO, the European Union, the World Bank, and the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Dr. Klazinga has (co)authored over 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has supervised 46 PhD candidates to date.
