Krunoslav Capak was born in Zagreb in 1962. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb in 1988. After completing his internship at the Clinical Hospital Centre Sisters of Mercy, he began working at the Croatian Institute of Public Health in 1989 as an expert associate in the Department of Physiology, Monitoring, and Improvement of Nutrition.

In 2016, he became the Director of the Croatian Institute of Public Health, leading the national institute responsible for public health. Under his leadership, in 2018, a successful merger with three institutions was carried out, based on a decision by the Government of the Republic of Croatia. Since 2019, as the Director of the Croatian Institute of Public Health, he has managed a wide range of public health areas, including occupational medicine, toxicology, and antidoping, as well as addiction prevention activities through the former Office for the Prevention of Substance Abuse of the Croatian Government, which became a part of the Institute along with state health institutes responsible for occupational medicine, toxicology, and antidoping.

His academic career began in 2000 when he became an assistant, and in 2021, he was appointed Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Health and Occupational Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Mostar. He is also an associate professor at the Department of Environmental Health and Occupational Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagreb, since 2021. He participates in teaching at the Faculties of Medicine at the University of Rijeka, Zagreb, and Mostar, as well as at the Faculty of Law, University of Split.

He is the President of the Croatian Society for Environmental Health and a member of the Croatian Society for Epidemiology of the Croatian Medical Association. From 2010 to 2013, he was a member of the Standing Committee of the Regional Committee of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe, and from 2011 to 2013, he chaired the European Environment and Health Task Force and was a member of the European Environment and Health Ministerial Board. In 2016, he was elected a member of the Croatian Academy of Medical Sciences.

He has been awarded the Memorial Medal of the Homeland War 1990-1991 as a participant in the Homeland War and subsequently the Order of Danica Hrvatska with the likeness of Katarina Zrinska, and the Order of the Croatian Trefoil, awards given for outstanding contributions to healthcare, social welfare, and the promotion of moral values, or for exceptional contributions to the Republic of Croatia made during war, direct war danger, or under extraordinary circumstances in peacetime.
